Luakit and pkgconfig

Hi,
I've been trying to install Luakit from sources and run into this problem.
First I installed all the dependencies required and pkg-config, which Luakit makefile uses to find them.
However I get a message output that the makefile can't find any of them.
I tried pkg-config --list-all and evectively there are very few packages listed.
Also I checked the /usr/lib/pkgconfig directory and there are only a few packages listed.
Any clue as to how I can proceed?
