Trying to install 10.-rc1

<< < (2/2)

BobC:
I did a fresh install from the good USB I now have.  Its up and running.

I know how to add it to grub

How do I replace Mate with IceWM?  or LXDE?  or LXQT?  I'm trying to rsetup an easily tuned system that uses little memory, which yours should do well at, I think.

I don't know Mate but do know how to tune an IceWM or OpenBox or even a JWM system.

Thanks for your efforts and help.  I am not having problems.  My problems were mostly the USB being burned wrong.

BobC:
I got it all running.  The sequence to get it running LXDE was to

1.  make sure your flash drive is actually good
2. boot it (debug worked best on mine)
3. let it install, and if you have passworded wifi with normal dynamic address, tell it to install wifi manual, then take defaults till you fill in network name and password
4. i didn''t try grub, so manually added the simple menu entry
5. it installs Mate, so if you want to change, connect to network first, go into cards and add what you want instead, then reboot and try Lxde or whatever you installed, and don't uninstall Mate until its working

Its working quite well on my 2007 HP Laptop DV9917

Thanks for your suggestions and patience with me :)

I'm not expecting to receive this kind of information. The subject matter is very desirable.
